The countdown till Yoga Day has begun. Thank you for taking the time to create positive change for women in Iran through your yoga practice. Yoga Day is spreading across Canada with 31 yoga events taking place across the country, from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia! 2 more weeks to go, and it’s not too late to spread the word, and call your communities to action. The more people we engage, the more we can do for women’s human rights activists around the world.
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Bahareh Hedayat, a young activist from Iran, has just spent another birthday in prison for trying to uphold this principle.
The first article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that all people are equal. However, Bahareh Hedayat – a member of Campaign for Equality serving a 10 year prison sentence for her activism in Iran – know that, in reality, this is far from the case. Bahareh has just spent another birthday in prison as a result of her human rights activism. Other brave members of the Campaign for Equality like her remain in prison as a result of demanding equality for women under Iranian law.
This has to change, and you can help. You can spread the word about Yoga Day, and help to raise funds that will enable Amnesty International to campaign for the protection and freedom of women’s human rights activists like Bahareh, in Iran, and around the world.
