Pest Control & Home Cleaning Before Diwali

Diwali is around the corner. We have often seen people undergo pest control and house cleaning before every Diwali. Sometimes we wonder why?

In India, people visit each other’s homes during this holiday season. Nobody would rather go to a neighbor’s house full of spiders or a house full of bed bugs. There is nothing scarier than walking into the bathroom with a cockroach or lizard staring at you. Imagine sitting on a sofa at your friend’s house and feeling like a mouse has just passed over your foot and is hiding right under the sofa. You can’t even sip tea peacefully and interact normally. Or imagine hearing a creak from the wooden floor that has been half-chewed by termites as you walk. But we still haven’t found a strong logic because always before Diwali and not other festivals.

Diwali is celebrated shortly after the monsoon ends. With all the cool weather and the happiness that the monsoon brings, there are also a lot of germs, insects and diseases. Even during Diwali, there are large-scale preparations of delicacies and this attracts many parasites. While we enjoy it as a “Festival”, parasites enjoy it equally as their “Pestival”. So, in fact, all those health risks caused by monsoons are neutralized by our ancient traditions of complete pest control and house cleaning.

People are often surprised when I say that pest control along with cleaning has been a tradition since ancient times. They ask: “Are you serious”? Cleaning I understand, but how the hell did they get pest control services in ancient times? It is a surprising fact that every Hindu tradition has a valid scientific and logical reason behind it.

Good! The ancient Indian practice of applying a thin paste made from cow dung, Gangajal, clay and cow urine, served as a disinfectant and “ecological pesticide”. This was a very scientific way of pest control because cow dung has a bacteriophage, a virus that infects and replicates within a bacterium. FAO and many other renowned institutions around the world have recognized the ancient Indian practice. Search Google and Wikipedia and you will find ample evidence.

How to go about pest control?

Pest control makes sure that all germs and infestations brought by the monsoons are eradicated. Cleaning along with painting and polishing ensure there are no cracks and crevices left on the wall and furniture to allow them to reproduce, host and multiply further.

1. What happens if only cleaning is done and pest control services remain?

Effective pest control requires a lot of trained mind, experience and resources to deal with them. As you know, parasites also have brains and are smart and intelligent. You can clean up physical dirt, but the parasites will immediately hide in the cracks and crevices. And the next day, you will find their excrement, hair, grease stains etc. again. So, cleaning and avoiding pest control would be a big mistake.

2. What happens if pest control is performed but cleaning is not performed?

A professional cleaning includes removing not only dust particles, but also cleaning grease and slime, food residues, pest droppings, clogged drainage, etc. It is important that parasites do not find food and water. A clean house is actually a hostile condition for parasites. No one, human or parasite, wants to arrive as a guest in a hostile environment. If they don’t find the front door, food and shelter, they surely wouldn’t want to stay there. Further breeding of parasites is also not possible in such a hostile condition.
